Concealed Digital Evaluation System

Evaluation without the candidate in the room

CDES separates candidate identity from the answer book using a barcode and a physical concealment sticker, then runs allocation, onscreen marking, validation and moderation on the digitised copy — so impartiality is a property of the process, and marks add themselves up.

The problem it addresses

Traditional evaluation leaks identity at four points

In a conventional cycle the candidate's name, seat number and handwriting travel with the answer book through every hand that touches it.

  • At the desk. Personal details are written on the cover of the answer book and remain visible through evaluation.
  • In transit. Multiple agencies handle physical bundles between centre, custodian and examiner, with coordination overhead at each transfer.
  • At marking. The examiner totals marks by hand on the front page, creating both a bias surface and an arithmetic risk.
  • At re-evaluation. Producing a clean copy for a candidate means manually masking awarded marks on a physical book.

Personal details and the printed seat number are physically concealed with an opaque holographic sticker before evaluation. The UID barcode — carrying only subject, section, medium, lot and serial — becomes the sole identity the examiner ever sees. The link back to the candidate is re-established only at result processing, inside the institution's own data.

Mechanics

How concealment is actually achieved

Two artefacts do the work: a barcode sticker that carries examination metadata, and an opaque sticker that removes everything else.

  1. Barcode stickers are generated from examination form data

    Printed course-wise, semester-wise, subject-wise and centre-wise. The human-readable half shows seat number, sticker number, subject name and centre code; the encoded half carries the same information as a barcode.

  2. The candidate fills in identity details on a purpose-designed answer book

    The answer book has defined zones: one for the barcode sticker, one for the identity block, and one for the concealment sticker that will cover it.

  3. Identity is physically concealed before the book leaves the centre chain

    An opaque holographic sticker covers the personal information block and the printed seat number, leaving only the barcode visible. Supplementary sheets receive the same treatment on their personal-information box.

  4. Books are received, counted and segregated into lots

    Answer books arrive at the processing centre with the supervisor's report. They are acknowledged, manually counted, checked for discrepancies, and segregated into lots by subject and medium. Job cards record page details.

  5. A UID sticker becomes the book's only identity

    Each book is affixed with a universal identification number carrying subject, section, medium of answer, lot number and serial number within the lot. From this point the UID is what the system and the examiner work with.

  6. The book is scanned without being cut

    Book scanners digitise the answer book with the spine intact. Question papers and model answers are scanned alongside. Pages are encrypted, uploaded to the central database and stored subject-wise and UID-wise.

  7. Evaluation runs on the digital copy

    Authenticated examiners receive automatically allocated books, mark question-wise on screen, and submit. The system totals, validates and records.

  8. Marks are reconnected to candidates only at result processing

    Compiled, verified data is transferred to the institution, where the UID-to-candidate mapping resolves inside the institution's own result system.

What sits on the examiner's screen

Everything needed to award a mark, and nothing that identifies the candidate.

Answer book rendering

The scanned answer book is displayed page by page with zoom, page navigation and a black-and-white or colour view. Question paper and model answer are available alongside, so the evaluator is not working from memory.

Question-wise marking palette

Marks are entered against each question and sub-question, with maximum marks shown for each. The palette tracks which questions have been marked and which remain, and indicates which are considered in the total.

Automatic summation and validation

The system totals question and sub-question marks and displays the result in figures and in words before submission. Marks above the configured maximum are refused at entry. Optional questions, mandatory sets and rounding are applied from the paper pattern configured before evaluation opened — so the same rules bind every evaluator on the panel.

Real-time saving

Annotation and marks are saved as the evaluator works, so an interrupted session does not cost a partially evaluated book.

Examiners, moderators and the people watching the clock

Evaluation at scale is a scheduling problem as much as an academic one.

Authenticated entry

Examiners and moderators are registered with their email address and mobile number. A temporary user ID and password are issued along with a one-time password sent to the registered mobile. Credentials can be changed by the examiner after first login, and the client application is downloaded from a supplied link.

System allocation

Answer books are allocated to evaluators by the system, with allocated, evaluated and remaining counts visible per subject. Manual selection of which book to mark is removed from the process.

Moderation

Moderator panels are configured alongside examiner panels, with their own allocation and their own recorded actions, so moderation is a distinct and traceable stage.

Location independence

Where an institution permits it, evaluation can be performed remotely rather than at a central assessment centre — removing the need for examiners to carry physical answer books, and the record-keeping burden that goes with it.

Coordinator dashboard

Supervisors and coordinators see expected, received, scanned, evaluated, moderated and rejected counts in real time, with progress by faculty — so a stalled subject or an unresponsive evaluator surfaces during the cycle, not after it.

Adoption without training overhead

The interface is deliberately plain. Specialist computer skills are not required — the intent is that a subject expert becomes productive in a single orientation session.

A note on claims. Turnaround improvement depends on your panel size, subject mix and moderation policy. We size an expected timeline against your own historical cycle during scoping rather than quoting a generic figure.

Moderation, re-evaluation and the audit record

The value of a concealed system is what it lets you demonstrate afterwards.

  • Re-evaluation without re-handling. The digital copy is retrieved by UID. Awarded marks can be removed from the image so the candidate receives a clean scanned copy, and a fresh evaluation can proceed.
  • Arithmetic risk removed at source. Because the system totals question-wise marks, the classic failure — an addition error on the front page propagating into the result — does not occur.
  • Entry-time validation. Marks exceeding the maximum for a question are rejected as they are entered, rather than discovered during scrutiny.
  • Accountability of counts. The number of answer sheets received and the page count per book are recorded, so any later dispute about a missing book has a documented baseline.

Common questions

What examination offices ask first

Does the answer book have to be cut for scanning?
No. Book scanners image the answer book without cutting the spine. The physical book remains intact and available for retrieval or call-back.
Can examiners still see the candidate's handwriting?
Yes — the answer script itself is what is evaluated. What is removed is the identity block: name, seat number, and the other printed fields that would let an examiner attribute the script to a specific candidate.
How are optional questions handled?
The paper pattern — questions, sub-questions, maximum marks and the solving pattern — is configured before evaluation opens. Optional-question logic and the treatment of questions considered or not considered in the total are applied from that configuration.
Do we have to move to remote evaluation?
No. Remote evaluation is optional and depends on your policy. The same system runs at a central assessment programme centre.
What is the difference between this and the barcode-based system?
Both conceal candidate identity using the same barcode and UID architecture. In the barcode-based system marking stays on paper and the barcode is read at scanning. Under CDES the book is scanned first and evaluation happens on screen, which adds automatic totalling, optional remote evaluation and instant retrieval.
Who holds the final result data?
The institution. Verified, compiled marks data is transferred to you for result processing, mark-sheet generation and declaration at your end.
